Frequently asked questions

We have put together some commonly asked questions

What floor sanding services do you offer in Hobart?

We specialise in a complete range of floor sanding and finishing services for Hobart homes and businesses. This includes: Sanding and polishing of existing hardwood floors, timber, cork and parquetry floor new installation and restoration, exterior timber deck refinishing, and installation of modern hybrid flooring.

Should I refurbish my rooms before having the floor sanded?

Ideally, yes. In order to prevent contamination from dust, silicone and other substances, it’s preferable to have any necessary plumbing, electrical or plastering work carried out prior to having your floor sanded.

Is floor sanding noisy?

Unfortunately, yes. Floor sanding can be rather loud, due to the machines we use. Our staff wear protective hearing aids, so it is advisable for you to be away from the premises while we take care of the sanding. Don’t worry though, it shouldn’t take long!

Why would I choose timber flooring over other floor coverings?

Well, firstly, timber floors are recyclable and renewable, so that’s good! Additionally, dirt, dust and bacteria can’t embed themselves in wooden flooring, so your home instantly becomes a safer, healthier place to be. Tests have also shown that wooden flooring provides a much better environment for allergy sufferers.

What happens when there are gaps between the boards?

Tasmanian Floor Surfacing Co can fill gaps between your floorboards using a clean, fine sawdust, which is mixed with a filler of flexible filler, for example Sikaflex. This mixture is available in different colours, in order to match the style and finish of your floor.

I have an old floor with black paint around the edge. Will you be able to see this after the floor is finished?

In the past, old floors were usually finished with Black Japan around the edges. During the sanding process, we make every effort to remove traces of the black stain. It’s tough stuff though, so a very slight discolouration may remain in some cases.

Can I change the colour of my floor?

Of course! Once we have finished the sanding prep and you have chosen your desired stain colour, we'll do a sample patch so you preview how the finished boards will look. Then once we get your approval, a stain can be applied and burnished into bare floorboards, prior to applying the appropriate clear finish.
